Where Woke Goes To Multiple  

In 2016, I pursued a career in coaching because of my love of people and my desire to help them live their lives at the highest level. In 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, that desire to help people was compounded by my personal grief, frustration and anger as a result of that tragedy. I wanted to make a difference -  to create social change using my coaching and training skills.

The result was the development of Racial Just Us, a division of Jump Street Coaching, to focus specifically on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) issues. Racial Just Us offers a full range of DEIB services including coaching, consulting, public speaking and training in DEIB issues, as well as its powerful signature program: The Coaching for Community Anti-Racism Series (CFC), helping individuals, groups and businesses create personalized action plans for change. As a result of its incredible flexibility, the applications of CFC have expanded beyond its anti-racism roots, to be an innovative and impactful way for participants to accept and appreciate the wide range of differences in all people.

Although DEIB coaching can be effective with all members of an organization, I believe the best, and sometimes only route, for meaningful organizational change is via the senior leadership team. During my work as a DEIB specialized coach, I have witnessed many highly dedicated and motivated individuals attempt to create change within their organizations. They have been successful to an extent, but typically their progress has stalled because of the lack of support or buy-in from senior leadership above them.

Their efforts effectively lead to a dead end. 

Seeing these outcomes occur over and over has led me to believe that meaningful, permanent DEIB change is not possible without the support of senior leadership. My belief is that senior leadership has the ability to set the tone and course for other employees within the organization. Senior leadership buy-in is critical for any significant organizational culture shifts, especially with regard to DEIB initiatives. Top level support means the allocation of resources such as time, money and manpower can take place in a well executed way which ensures that DEIB initiatives have a much better chance at being successful.

Coaching is an incredibly powerful concept to create organizational culture change in individuals, groups or teams. But, it's important for all three levels of the organization, senior management, mid-management and direct level to work together to successfully create change.
